new skill every month: sewing

with february in full swing – and pretty snowy and cold from where i’m sitting – i’m hunkering down with another skill to learn this month – sewing! sewing, in the most basic form, and i go way back. my sisters and i would make crude clothing and blankets for our dolls and make pillows out of fabric scraps. as the years went by my sewing skills were really only demonstrated as hemming pants and sometimes, embroidery. i never took the time to learn how to use the sewing machine my dad gave to my sisters and i for christmas – until now. more and more i’m finding myself interested in making things, rather than just trying to buy. so many times i look at a skirt or a home decor item and think – ‘i could just make that!’

once i built my sewing table in my living room, it gave me the perfect spot and inspiration to really dive in and explore the world of sewing. for my lessons i’m using the sewing 101 class from a beautiful mess but atly, which is a resource for all kinds of classes, offers a sewing 101 class as well.

i have a few ideas already for sewing projects, once i get the hang of this thing. stay tuned!

Catherine – I am so excited to see your blog and all the great things that you are doing!! I am truly blessed to be able to call you my cousin. Keep up what you’re doing and I’m excited to see more come from you and may even learn a little reading your blog. I’m always wanting to pick up sewing – maybe this is what I need to help me get started on small projects that I’ve been wanting to do.
